Yes. Whether opposite or tangential to valid_punctuation is unimportant.

Sounds feasible. At least I should be able to change all the
diverted instancies of isalnum() (or similar) into IS_WORD_CHAR() (or
similar) by then. I'll then work to get that macro to do what I want.
It sounds pretty limited and feasible (at this point).

I have no such worries, specifically none between 3.2 and htdig-3-1-x; CVS
should handle that branch nicely AFAIK.
